Meet the Gardener
Courtney grew up right here in Newport Beach — and she still lives in the same neighborhood. Her two teenage sons go to Newport Harbor High, the same school she and her husband attended. Before starting Homegrown, she worked as a social worker, a career rooted in the same thing that drives her today: connecting people.
Everything changed on a trip to Tanzania with a group of Newport Beach women through the Sojourn Foundation. They stayed on a farm at a local school where the community grows all of their own food. “It’s all a very sustainable society,” she says. “It really lit a fire in me.” She’s returning to Tanzania with her son Charlie through Asante Sana.
Her method is intensive companion planting — fully organic, no insecticide, everything edible including flowers for garnish. A complete little ecosystem in your yard. You’ll find her most days gardening in her own front yard, talking to neighbors who stop by. “I love it because it just connects me with the community. Everyone’s kind of in their houses, so I’m trying to break that a little bit.”
